The Portuguese Circle is happy to announce the Portugal to New York: Unplugged concert on March 25th, 2012.
This will be the first edition of the concert and will showcase great music currently being produced in Portugal. A roster of great artists has been put together for your enjoyment, including Mikkel Solnado, Youthless and October Flight.
In 1984 the Secção de Fado decided to bring back to life the old Estudantina Académica de Coimbra. Since then , from bus to bus and plane to lane, the Estudantina has stepped on stages all over the world, including in countries like Holland, Italy, Finland, Peru, and Japan.
As part of its travels, it was present at Expo 92 in Seville as part of the official celebration for Portugal Day. In 1994 performed in Italy at the Genova Ducal Palace, at a dinner part of a NATO meeting.
Born in Angra do Heroísmo, the Azorean band October Flight, previously known as Jamandizen, started in September 2008.
In 2009 with less than a year in existence, the band won AngraRock, the biggest band contest in the Azores, which opened a lot of doors to a Summer filled with concerts on the main stages of the Azores, sharing stages with acts such as "Da Weasel", "Susana Félix" etc..
Youthless are Alex Klimovitsky (vocals, drums, keyboard) and Sebastiano Ferranti (bass), originally from New York and London. The duo's refreshingly direct songs have already caught the attention of NME, Drowned in Sound and CMU, and the A New Band A Day blog went so far as to name Youthless its Favourite Band of 2010.
Mikkel was born on October 1975 in Copenhagen, Denmark. He is the son of Portuguese Actor Raul Solnado and his Danish Mother, Hanne Louise.
When he was only 6 months old the family relocated to Portugal. It was at the early age of 11 that Mikkel first found the band Iron Maiden and was fascinated by the band's drummer, Nicko McBrain.
The Grupo de Cordas da Secção de Fado da Associação Académica de Coimbra (Strings Group) is dedicated to traditional music from Portugal and the world.
With Amadeu Magalhães as artistic director since the group reappeared, in every show the Grupo de Cordas commits to the safekeeping and spreading of traditional music in all its simplicity and excellence of performance.
Join us on June 16th 2013 for another Portugal Day NY, in Central Park, New York.
