In 1984 the Secção de Fado decided to bring back to life the old Estudantina Académica de Coimbra. Since then , from bus to bus and plane to lane, the Estudantina has stepped on stages all over the world, including in countries like Holland, Italy, Finland, Peru, and Japan[1].
As part of its travels, it was present at Expo 92 in Seville as part of the official celebration for Portugal Day. In 1994 performed in Italy at the Genova Ducal Palace, at a dinner part of a NATO meeting.
Being a Estudantino is a way of life.
The Estudantina has already published three EPs, "Estudantina Passa" in 1989 , "Canto da Noite" in 1992 and "Portugal Total" in 1998, comprised of original pieces and orchestrations.
The tradicional roots of the Estudantina have been an important role is the preservation and promotion of Coimbra's musical and cultural heritage. In its repertoire there are many compositions by authors from Coimbra, with styles as varied as Canção de Coimbra and erudite coral pieces.
On a yearly basis the Estudantina Universitária de Coimbra organizes FESTUNA - Festival Internacional de Tunas de Coimbra. As a result, a CD " V FESTUNA" was recorded live at Jardim da Sereia and published. MOre recently the multimedia CD " VII FESTUNA", was recorded at Teatro Académico Gil Vicente, with Luis de Matos.
